top 3 summer essentials
This summer has been HOT (climate change crisis, anyone?) and I’ve been wearing a couple of things non-stop–partially because my brain shuts down and just gravitates towards what it knows when it’s too hot to think, and partially because I’ve simply fallen in love with these pieces. Keep reading to learn more about these key summer pieces from Balenciaga, Castañer, and Madewell!
I’ve been bouncing between sunglasses from lower end brands for the past year or so, but they kept being bent out of shape. I wanted to splurge on a nicer pair that I could wear every day without worrying too much about them so I tried about 30 pairs of sunnies at Nordstrom Rack and eventually decided on this cool reddish-brown ombre pair from Balenciaga. It has a really nice weight, sits nicely enough on my face (it’s not perfect since they’re not specifically made for an Asian nose bridge but I’ll take what I can get), and I think it works really well with my round face shape. It’s fairly oversized and classically shaped, which is how I usually like my sunglasses — I haven’t really been able to get behind the skinny/pointed sunglasses trend. If you’re looking for nice sunglasses this summer, I’d highly recommend these or any other Balenciaga pair at Nordstrom Rack. I also easily get headaches from sunglasses, and these haven’t bothered me much at all.
Confession time: I am very easily influenced by what Duchess Meghan and Kate are wearing, so once I saw them wearing Castañer wedges this year, I had to have them. This type of espadrille wedge has been on my radar for a while since they’re such a classic shoe for the summer but I wanted to pick the right brand and style for me. Besides the royal connection, I chose these because I really like the history behind the brand — they were the espadrille designer for Yves Saint Laurent back in the 60s. I wore first them for my goddaughter’s baptism at the beginning of June and they’ve been my go-to shoe every weekend since then. I opted for the Carina 60 rather than the typical Carina 80 and they’re super comfortable, even though the straps can be intimidating — these wedges are definitely easy to walk in and I’ve been in them for hours without feeling any pain from the straps or heel height.
I’ve been wearing this Madewell skirt so much this summer that I think I need them in a different wash. I don’t think I’ve actually dabbled in the denim mini skirt world since middle school, but they’ve somehow come back in style and are super cute without looking too juvenile. Denim skirts are so perfect for the summer since they can help you put together a cute outfit really easily — you can pair it with a t-shirt and sneakers for a comfy casual vibe or a nice blouse and espadrilles like the ones in this post for a dressier summer look. This pair feels really high quality (who doesn’t love Madewell’s denim?) and the light distressing on the hem adds a bit of edge while still looking put together. This is also a piece that you could easily take into your fall wardrobe if you’re planning ahead — pair it with a slouchy sweater and you’re all set.
