weekend adventures & mini haul
Hi guys! Gerome and I didn’t leave the house at all yesterday (and probably still won’t today) because he’s been sick and now I’m feeling sick. It’s probably because we spent too much time out in the cold this past weekend. Feeling bored by the places we normally frequent in Boston, we explored everywhere from Charlestown to Newport, Rhode Island. Worth getting sick with the weather now getting better? Probably not, but we still had a lot of fun and did some shopping along the way. Keep reading to see where we went and what we got!
On Friday we had a late lunch at Shojo in Chinatown - I read somewhere that their ramen was amazing so we decided to try it out. Gerome got the Pretty Good Chicken sandwich and I ordered the Tori Miso Ramen. The sandwich that Gerome got was smaller than he hoped for but still ‘pretty good’ and the fries that it came with were yummy (I stole more of his fries than I probably should have). My ramen was not mind-blowing but still good on a cold day - the broth was extremely flavored but the noodles were kind of stiff. I would probably go back to try their dinner menu and for the cool atmosphere of the place - it’s kind of like Hojoko in Fenway’s Verb Hotel, another Japanese restaurant I like.
Stopped by Sephora for the beginning of their Beauty Insider sale. I’m finally VIB this year so I got 15% off. I grabbed a new concealer - Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer. I got it in the shade Medium Neutral, which I debated for the longest time whether it was the right shade for me or not. I was going to get the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer again but there weren’t testers for the shades I wanted to check so I figured why not try a new concealer. I’m currently liking it after the few days that I’ve been able to try it. When combined with a color corrector, my eye bags are mostly masked and it’s also great at hiding redness on my face. I also picked up my birthday gift since my birthday is later this month - I’ve already tried the Marc Jacobs liner and lipstick so I went with the Fresh cleanser and mask.
After driving around Charlestown, which is actually really pretty with lots of pastel colored houses, we went to Downeast Cider House for their Summer Blend Launch. It was really cold but we braved the weather to line up for some cider outside in their makeshift beer garden anyway. I had their original blend, which I love, and Gerome tried their Maple Blend, which tasted like their normal cider chased with a shot of maple syrup. We ended up hiding in the car to drink because it was that cold. We made Frank Pepe-style white clam pizza for dinner that night with leftover clams that we had from a potluck we had. It’s a super easy recipe if you cheat and use a pre-made crust, which we did, but making the crust would’ve probably made it better. We followed the recipe from Men’s Journal and chopped up about 15 clams (the recipe calls for 36 littleneck clams but we had large clams). It ended up tasting great and pretty close to Frank Pepe’s pizza. We also made clam chowder with the other leftover clams.
On Saturday we were at a loss for what to do since it was so nice (but still cold) outside and we felt like we had gone and done everything there currently is to do in Boston. We finally decided on going on a day trip to Newport, RI. Even though it was a cloudy day, it was still beautiful there. We started off our visit by walking down a bit of Cliff Walk, which is a really picturesque oceanfront walk that’s bordered by gorgeous mansions. After walking by the ocean we walked along the mansions of Bellevue Avenue, which are all basically #housegoals.
The seaside atmosphere of Newport had quite the influence on our shopping - we both ended up getting Sperry’s at a preppy shop called Island Outfitters. While I’m a fan of Sperry, Gerome has never owned a pair of them in his life and has a general distaste for the brand. He changed his mind when he saw that the Sperry driving mocs were 75% off. I really like the blue-gray color of his shoes plus the red accent stripe. I felt like getting a pair of loafers myself since almost all my shoes are black and I felt like I could style a bunch of new outfits with my less worn clothes and cute brown loafers. I’m excited to wear these shoes for spring, like with some girlfriend jeans and a button down shirt.
After exploring Newport a bit more, we realized it was still restaurant week in Newport and looked for a place to have dinner. Benjamin’s Restaurant and Raw Bar had the most appealing menu so we made our way there. It was a nice restaurant with your usual seafood place atmosphere. I ordered the Bay Scallop and Green Onion Fritter, Filet Mignon and Lobster Creme Caramel, and Chocolate Mouse and Berries. Gerome ordered the Crab and Fontina Arancine, Rib Eye with Lobster Thermidor, and Grand Marnier Strawberry Shortcake. It was an extremely rich and filling meal - I’ve never eaten a meal that involved filet mignon, foie gras, and lobster all in one dish. Gerome thought that his lobster was okay and his rib eye was pretty good. We were so full by the time we got our dessert. It was a really nice way to end the trip to Newport.
On Sunday, Gerome wanted to take me to a French macaron pop-up event by Boston Bonbon at Chicken & Rice Guys in Medford because he knows I love macarons. He also wasn’t about to pass up having Chicken & Rice Guys for Sunday brunch. I love macarons and try all the macarons I can in Boston - but I’m forever wishing that Laduree opens up in the city sometime soon! Boston Bonbon doesn’t have a brick and mortar store yet but has events all over the city. I loved their macarons, so I can’t wait to see them at events like Sowa soon! My favorite was the nutella macaron (it’s usually my favorite flavor no matter where I go). I’m excited to finish this blog post because I have a few more macarons left that I’m going to treat myself with afterward (probably not a good idea for my sore throat but oh well). That day was surprisingly enough my first time eating CNR, and I am now a fan of it. Very simple but delicious eats.
After brunch we went to Assembly Row. I failed to find an Adidas Originals track jacket at the Adidas store again, nor could I find a Nike Windrunner at Nike, so that was sad. We stopped by Banana Republic since it’s basically Gerome’s favorite store and they were having a 40% of sale event (but when are they not having that event though). He picked up another shawl collar sweater, something he used to have an aversion to but grew to love after I insisted that they were my favorite kind of sweater and looked really good on him. He especially liked that this particular sweater has pockets at the front.
Stopped by Sephora again to partake in the Beauty Insider sale once more. While I was super tempted to pick up the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit since I’ve been obsessing over highlighters lately, I tried to show some self-restraint and limited myself to picking up a new eyeliner since my current go-to was drying out. I was torn between getting the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liner, which was my holy grail eyeliner for the longest time, and the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, which was what I was most recently using. I ended up going with the Kat Von D liner again since it has lasted me a longer time than my Stila liners have lasted me. I still really want the Glow Kit, so maybe I’ll get it one day.
It was seriously sunny that day but I had no idea where my sunglasses were, so I was on the hunt for some sunglasses to wear that day. I ended up finding a cheap but very cute pair that I liked at Forever 21. While my dream sunglasses are currently the Dior So Real sunglasses, they’re just a bit out of my budget. The pair I got were brow-bar aviator sunglasses - I knew I wanted some type of aviators or sunglasses with a brow bar so these were perfect. I also got some tops to add to my spring wardrobe. I got a ribbed crop top in blush because you can’t go wrong with crop tops or blush pink for spring. I also got a cream high-neck pleated top that Gerome suggested, which is so pretty and feels so light.
That’s all for what we did this weekend! I hope it inspires some of you who are looking for something to do or new places to eat this weekend! Comment down below if you have places in the Boston area you recommend on going to this weekend - Gerome and I are always looking for new things to try!
